Thank-you to everyone who contributed to making EARTH DAY WITH MAUDE BARLOW a huge success. We packed the room with 200+ people in attendance. Maude got a standing ovation for her honest and inspiring presentation. People asked some great questions.
Thank-you, also, to Lynne Fernandez, of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives and to Conservation Minister Bill Blaikie for raising the public level of awareness of the HEART OF THE BOREAL. This pristine wilderness on the east side of Lake Winnipeg, one of the highest conservation value forests in the world, deserves our attention on Earth Day and it will on our minds on election day, as well. Opposition leader Hugh McFadyen has made it clear that he will reverse the governments decision to keep the hydro BiPole 3, transmission line out of this important forest, if he is elected. Lynne Fernandez made a compelling case for including many values, including preservation of Indigenous cultural sites, long term, sustainable economics, and the value of this boreal forest as a carbon sink to help regulate our climate, when making decisions about land use.
A very warm thank-you to the Fort Garry Hotel for having us as your guests in the lovely 7th floor Concert Hall, for the wonderful food and setting that helped to make this a truly memorable EARTH DAY. The great company of our guests was enhanced by the beautiful location and service.
